This is a podcast, with full transcripts available if you’d prefer to read instead of listen.
Drugs that target the neurotransmitter serotonin have long been prescribed to treat depression. Now the spotlight is turning to other aspects of brain chemistry. In this episode, the neuropharmacologist John Krystal shares findings that are overturning our understanding of depression.
That episode is part of a podcast series called…The Joy of Why:
The mathematician and author Steven Strogatz and the astrophysicist and author Janna Levin interview leading researchers about the great scientific and mathematical questions of our time.
There are soooooooo many good questions asked and answered in that series.
This might be a good place to start though: Deep Curiosity Inspires The Joy of Why Podcast

Pride month is officially June, so HAPPY PRIDE!!!
But….that doesn’t mean it is being celebrated everywhere they do celebrate this month (where I am celebrations happen in July).
You may have heard that the first Pride was a riot - and that is fact:

CBC makes their first of 2 appearances this issue with an explanation that ends my confusions about why June is Pride Month, and yet locally we celebrate in July.
Why is Pride celebrated in different months across Canada? - CBC
There’s been so much in the news pitting the religious against the 2SLGBTQ+ community, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon:
Religious groups are protecting Pride events — upending the LGBTQ+ vs. faith narrative: More than 120 faith groups will fan out across 50 events this June to de-escalate extremist anti-LGBTQ+ protests from hate groups - via the19th

Housing is an issue impacting communities around the world but it seems like there’s more bad news somewhere in North America be it for renters or home owners/buyers every day now.
At Where can you afford to rent? CBC present a great interactive page exploring the costs and factors in renting. You can explore options (based on data current as of October 2023) for communities right across Canada.
It also includes ample details and facts such as this heart warmer:
“As rental availability decreased, rental costs have surged across Canada in recent years. Since 2018, the average rent for a two-bedroom home has increased 70 per cent faster than wages.”
The link for that page nails it: affordability-crisis
For those in the U.S., NBC offers a less detailed, but no less eye opening and heart breaking interactive look at “how many counties where the monthly payments on median-priced homes would fall to affordable levels”.
Where in the U.S. can you afford a home on your income?

Polina writes a popular newsletter called The Profile that is essentially this Who? question on steroids. If you are interested in people, her’s is the newsletter for you.
Every week she curators half a dozen or so profiles from around the web:

This month also marks the one year anniversary of the release of her first book, Hidden Genius. Currently on my desk, I’d say this a great summer read that’s enjoyable and easy to digest while giving lots of points to reflect on and consider for your own use.
I’ve read thousands of profiles on people and companies.
Let’s play this game again.
Give me a topic/idea you want to learn about and I’ll reply with one profile to read.

In last week’s issue we noted the power of talking to yourself in the 2nd person.
This week, we’re looking at the third person, and how you can use it to train yourself to be wiser!! Willing to hedge a bet that swearing here will also help too!
Simple rumination – the process of churning your concerns around in your head – isn’t the answer….
A bulk of research has already shown that this kind of third-person thinking can temporarily improve decision making. Now a preprint at PsyArxiv finds that it can also bring long-term benefits to thinking and emotional regulation. The researchers said this was ‘the first evidence that wisdom-related cognitive and affective processes can be trained in daily life, and of how to do so’.
Curious Counting: The Solution - Lawyer sentenced to death for Lin Qi murder
“The release of Netflix's series 3 Body Problem has been watched millions of times around the globe since its release late last month.
It has even found an audience in China where Netflix is unavailable, sparking much chatter among viewers of the series.
But many fans of the three-book series, credited with propelling China's nascent science fiction genre after its publication in 2008, have also been paying attention to a court room in Shanghai where one of the key players behind the adaptation was sentenced to death just a day after the show's release.”

Closing Curiosity
Been working on better sourcing and identifying the graffiti and artists behind it where doable with the aim of noting the artist, image source, and location.
I will now date myself by asking how many others recall the days when a/s/l was just a part of online chatting?
What does a/s/l mean? (hint: it’s not American Sign Language!)
Until next week - stay curious (and weird!)!
